My artistic reputation seems to have developed from my love of shadows.
Some nicknames are "The Shadow Lady" and "The Shadow Queen", both of
which are greatly appreciated. However, my intention is not to just
create shadows, but to create additional shapes.

The shapes, of all forms, are my focus. This is probably because of my
love of lines, angles and drafting, which I did for many years. Strong
contrast helps to define those shapes in my paintings. This piece was
inspired by my Mom's flower garden, as are several of my paintings.

Defining values
Bright sunlight makes it easier to see the strong shadow shapes. The
use of strong darks helps provide a full range of values with which to
play. Adding color to the shadows adds interest and depth. Not every
painting is a masterpiece. Every painting does have a story, however,
and brings joy in the creation.

Working on these boards as a support was a real challenge. Even with
multiple layers of gesso as sealant, the paint wouldn't flow the way I
prefer. From now on, it's going to be just canvas.
